A IUIES course could certainly be a very important chance to improve an international career and to develop the sociological field of study.

Indeed, in my point of view, it has been very useful on the one hand to consider in particular some important topics of the current world (migrations, human rights, globalization and social related problems, transborder cooperation, etc..) and on the other hand to implement a socialization process based on a multicultural education system.

My PhD at IUIES has been the best formative experience ever giving me the opportunity to undertake several researches under expert guidance. It has been a plesure to confront myself with my colleagues coming from all over the world and to have the opportunity to teach several seminars at Triest and Klagenfurt universities.

Sandi HILAL, Palestinian.
She attended the PhD in Transborder policies for daily life which he ended in 2006 with a final dissertation on "Cross-border policies in West Bank-Palestine".

The current positions that Sandi Hilal holds are Head of the Camp Improvement Program (West Bank) in UNRWA that permits her to work on daily based in the camps, and she is also a partner in the London/Bethlehem Architectural Studio together with Alessandro Petti, Eyal Weizman. One of the main projects that the studio is dealing with is a long term project called Decolonizing Architecture project, that critically explores Israeli settlements and military camps.

I would recommend the IUIES course because it helped me to developed and elaborate freely many of the topics I was interested on by giving the space and the adequate courses for such purpose.
Camp improvement program

UNRWA’s Camp Improvement Program is a new initiative in participatory planning. In 2004 UNRWA made the decision to radically overhaul its approach to refugee camp rehabilitation and identified the need for integrated, holistic and community-based planning as urgent. Since then Camp Improvement in the West Bank has developed as an innovative intervention that ensures the participation of a wide spectrum of refugees in the planning, design and regeneration of their camps and builds on the latter’s considerable skills and knowledge. It is part of the principle aims of the program that these interventions not only improve the living standards of refugees but that they also transfer to them a set of organizational tools that can be critical in their struggle for a fuller exercise of their human rights. www.unrwa.org

Decolonizing architecture - The project uses architecture to articulate the spatial dimension of a process of decolonization. Recognizing that Israeli colonies and military bases are amongst the most excruciating instruments of domination, the project assumes that a viable approach to the issue of their appropriation is to be found not only in the professional language of architecture and planning but rather in inaugurating an “arena of speculation” that incorporates varied cultural and political perspectives through the participation of a multiplicity of individuals and organizations. The project engages a less than ideal world. It does not articulate a utopia of ultimate satisfaction. Its starting point is not a resolution of the conflict and the just fulfilment of all Palestinian claims; also, the project is not, and should not be thought of, in terms of a solution. Rather it is mobilizing architecture as a tactical tool within the unfolding struggle for Palestine. It seeks to employ tactical physical interventions to open a possible horizon for further transformations.

I would recommend PhD courses at IUIES, for their international orientation and for the offer of many classes about different topics. Moreover, it is of great help to dispose of IUIES professors’ expertise and of IUIES facilities, like the library.

Armando GUIDA, Italian.
HE attended the PhD in Transborder policies for daily life which he ended in 2004 with a final dissertation on "The foreign debt of the poor Countries: analysis and hypotheses of solution".
In the last two years he taught Italian language in two American Universities in Florence and in Siena. Now he is working as a free-lance lecturer on the topic of transborder policies.

During the PhD “Transborder policies for daily life” that I attended, I had a deep knowledge of the main European structures, from a legal, economical and political point of view. I had a wider outlook of the European processes with a particular focus on the regional problems and on the transborder policies: cohesion and integration of the border areas, with a political, economical, social and cultural perspective. I also studied related topics such as the transformations of the contemporary society, the international migrations and the multi-ethnic societies.

I particularly liked these topics and I developed them in my PhD thesis “Il debito estero dei Paesi poveri: analisi e ipotesi di soluzione” (The foreign debt of the poor Countries: analysis and hypotheses of solution). Later on I put the PhD topics to good use through a research about the immigration for IRPET of Florence (Istituto Regionale Programmazione Economica Toscana).

Would I suggest a IUIES course? The answer is yes, because the studied topics are worthwhile and of topical interest.

My experience itself was positive. I met a lot of new friends and the friendliness and professionalism of the trainers was outstanding. Not only did they teach us the evolution of the policies in the transborder areas and in the EU, they were an invaluable source of information of their country that help us to understand the perspective and the request of all the state involved in EU integration. I give this course my recommendation.

Studying at IUIES has been a great opportunity to deepen my research interest. My dissertation is entitled "La protezione delle minoranze nazionali nella regione dell'Europa centro-orientale: il caso emblematico della minoranza Rom". The main issue of the research is the protection of national minorities in the Central and Eastern European countries, especially it analyses the international and regional standards of protection and the case study of Rom-Sinti national minority in Europe. The general historical background of the dissertation is the end of the bipolar system after the fall of the last huge European empire of Urss and Yugoslavia and the bringing up of new nationalisms.

- MA in Communication and Methods of European policy making

Dede KASNECI, Albanian.
He attended the MA in Methods in European Policy Making which he ended in 2005 with a final dissertation on "European Union Action for the Stabilization of the Balkans".

He is currently working as Officer at European Integration Office, Parliament of the Republic of Albania

As an alumnus of the IUIES MA Methods in European Policy Making, I strongly recommend it to all those prospective students who intend to attend an MA in European Studies. The distinctive feature of the MA programme offered by IUIES is its unparalleled academic excellence, stimulating international academic environment, up-to-the minute classes and lectures as well as its unique synergy between theory and practice that are hard to gain elsewhere. This inter-disciplinary programme provides students not only with a sound understanding of the methods and processes of EU policy-making at multiple levels, but also with a critical background of key historical, philosophical, legal and economic issues that the European policy-making setting raises. The perfect synergy between the theory and practice of this programme also ensures that students not only acquire a solid knowledge of major theoretical approaches to the contemporary EU policy-making landscape, but also ensures that the students acquire, through focused courses and exercises, the necessary skills for advanced analysis and evaluation of the EU polices and their implementation.

At the end of the studies, the IUIES MAs Degree offers to its holders a comparative advantage as well as opens the door for numerous career paths either as scholars or as high-ranking experts in EU policy-making affairs and beyond.

Gianfabrizio, LADINI. Italian.
He attended the MA in Methods in European Policy Making which he ended in 2008 with a final dissertation on "‘Ordine, Conflitto, Guerra ed Europa’, ‘Order, Conflict, War and Europe’, Political Analysis".

He is currently working n Cyprus within ‘Dialogues of Peace’ project.

"Our activities aim at supporting trust-building and reconciliation processes between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities. We work with two local civil society organizations (CSOs) and we act as a bridge between the island’s divisions. Amongst other things, the most recent ones include facilitating bi-communal cultural initiatives (the last one being a Greek Cypriot theatre group playing in a Turkish Cypriot festival), website improvements in three languages (English, Greek and Turkish), organizing an island-wide ‘responsible tourism’ package for Italian tourists, promoting a business deal between a Turkish Cypriot producer and a Greek Cypriot seller. We’ve been also promoting and managing the contacts between Cypriot and Italian CSOs. Currently I’m personally involved in the negotiations with two local partners (one in each side of the UN ‘buffer zone’) that are leading us to present a joint project which will be funded by an EU Programme."

I would recommend a IUIES course not only because of good price/quality relations but also for the good combination between an academic-style theoretical preparation and a field work-oriented perspective. Some of my teachers, indeed, were academic scholars while others provided me with a direct insight of the problems and features of their daily work. In short I found in the IUIES courses I attended a good mixture of theory and practice. Finally, although I didn’t find my past internship or current professional opportunities directly through IUIES structures or operators, I met both of my chances thanks to IUIES, namely the International Summer School and a course’s teacher.

Luisa Seculin, Italian.

IUIES organizes its courses in an International environment, giving you the opportunity to meet people (students and teachers) from different countries and cultures. Of course, you can practise the foreign languages you know, and it’s very important for your professional career.

The bank I work for appreciated the fact that I had attended this Master.

David SACCA , Palestinian.

It’s not simply a course, it’s much more than that; personally, I discovered a family.
